The Red-Green Alliance denounces the impeachment of Dilma Rousseff and express support to the forces that struggle to reestablish Brazilian democracy
The Red-Green Alliance (Enhedslisten) from Denmark denounces the impeachment of the President of Brazil, Dilma Rousseff, and expresses our full support to the forces that fight to reestablish Brazilian democracy as well as transparency and social justice.
An anti-corruption campaign supported by a biased coverage by mainstream media has been used as an excuse to launch an impeachment process against the democratically elected President Dilma Rousseff. Since it has not been possible to accuse President Dilma Rousseff of corruption, the impeachment is based on allegations of breaking budgetary laws. The allegations refer to a budgetary practice also used by several local governors and former presidents, including the now installed President Michel Temer in his time as Vice-president.
Brazil is in the middle of a major corruption scandal, where at least one third of the members of congress are under suspicion or accusation of corruption, as well as one third of the ministers in the coup government that replaced the Dilma administration. In fact, there is strong evidence that the ousting of President Dilma Rousseff is due to a fear that her government is a threat to a corrupt practice which has been commonplace in Brazil.
All this clearly indicates that President Dilma Rousseff was impeached as part of a political coup. The opposition used an opportunity to shift the government, thus disregarding the popular will of the majority of Brazilians that voted for her as president. In other words: a coup d’état.
We therefore urge the Danish government and the European Union to follow the example of many of Brazils neighbouring countries that does not recognize the illegitimate coup government of Brazil.
Simultaneously, we express our support for the forces in Brazil that struggle to reestablish the democratic culture of the country, combat corruption and tax evasion, and fight for a more social just society.
